A História de Espera Feliz
Espera Feliz é um município do
estado de Minas Gerais. Sua população estimada em 2013 foi de 24.098 (IBGE).
habitantes. Espera Feliz encontra-se a 23 km de Carangola, e a 378 km de Belo
Horizonte, a capital do estado.
natural à região do ouro, evitando assim o contrabando.
respectivamente a:
– São Sebastião onde hoje se
localiza o povoado de São Sebastião da Barra;
– São Gonçalo onde hoje se
localiza o povoado de São Gonçalo;
– São João Batista onde hoje se
localiza a cidade de Caiana;
– Divino Espírito Santo onde hoje
se localiza o Distrito de Divininho (Caiana);
– São José onde hoje se localiza
o Distrito de São José da Pedra Menina;
– Santo Antonio de Pádua onde
hoje se localiza a comunidade do Cruzeiro;
– Santa Rita de Cássia onde hoje
se localiza o povoado de Santa Rita (Caparaó);
– Nossa Senhora da Conceição onde
hoje se localiza a cidade de Alto Caparaó;
mineração viria apenas no século XX.
Santa Luzia do Carangola – MG
projetou, no início do século XX, a Estrada de Ferro THE LEOPOLDINA RAILWAY
No
centro o Senhor Dioclécio Lacerda construiu o primeiro prédio, destinado a
hotel.

The Story of Happy Waiting

the state of Minas Gerais. Its estimated population in 2013 was 24,098 (IBGE).
population. Espera Feliz is 23 km from Carangola, and 378 km from Belo
Horizonte, the state capital.
HISTORIC:
Tradition informs that a
commission of engineers, having been sent by the Imperial Government of D.
Pedro, for research in the region, camped in the place where the current Praça
da Bandeira is located, in the center of the city. As usual, some engineers,
members of the imperial commission, waited for possible fighters that were
abundant in the region. As expected, there was no shortage of fighters and,
after successive days, they were “HAPPY” in that endeavor and hence the
original name “HAPPY WAITING”.
It is also said that Capt.
Antonio Carlos de Souza, resident in Carangola, upon acquiring a vast plot of
land, within which the majority of the city of Espera Feliz is located, came
with family and friends from time to time , walk and hunt on the land he had
purchased. The hunting was truly abundant and easy. They were very “HAPPY”
“WAITING” for the hunt. And when they were asked where they had gone, they
simply said: “We went to Feliz Espera”, that is, where one is “HAPPY” in the
“WAITING” of the hunt. Hence the name stuck. “Se non é vero, é bene provato”,
as the Italian saying goes.
But the primitive name, given by
the first entrants was Braço do Rio, because of the confluence of the two
rivers that bathe the city. Until the beginning of the 19th century, this
region was closed to exploration. The so-called “Forbidden Zone” was constituted,
an area in which the forest could not be opened for human occupation, as it
served as a natural barrier to the gold region, thus preventing smuggling.
So when the first explorers
arrived at these lands, at the beginning of the 19th century, at the time
inhabited by tribes of the “puri crowned” ethnic group, they demarcated them
with crosses dedicated respectively to:
– São Sebastião where the village
of São Sebastião da Barra is located today;
– São Gonçalo where the village
of São Gonçalo is located today;
– São João Batista where the city
of Caiana is located today;
– Divino Espírito Santo where the
District of Divininho (Caiana) is today located;
– São José where the District of
São José da Pedra Menina is located today;
– Santo Antonio de Pádua where
the Cruzeiro community is located today;
– Santa Rita de Cássia where the
village of Santa Rita (Caparaó) is today located;
– Nossa Senhora da Conceição
where the city of Alto Caparaó is located today;
Therefore, in 1822, Col. Antonio
Dutra de Carvalho – Cel. Dutrão inaugurated the clearing of the lands that
today are covered by the slopes of the Caparaó River. In 1831, other
adventurers, coming from the headwaters of the Carangola River, crossing the mountains
that separate its slopes from the Paraíba River, settled at the sources of the
São João River, in the lands that would later constitute the municipality of
Espera Feliz.
The lands located at the
headwaters of the São João River, where numerous streams originate, were
acquired in 1831, an imprecise date, by the warden Manoel Esteves de Lima,
owner of the large “Santa Maria” property. Today, the municipality of Caparaó
is located on these plots of land – the former district of Espera Feliz.
The first landowner on the site
of the current city of Espera Feliz was Lieutenant-Colonel Francisco Xavier
Monteiro da Gama. He later transferred these to Antonio Francisco de Oliveira.
He, without the resources to manage the property, transferred them to his
brother-in-law, Capt. Antonio Carlo de Souza, in 1873. The main reason for the
clearing and settlement was the search for fertile land for agriculture. Mining
would only come in the 20th century.
The entire territory that today
forms part of the municipality of Espera Feliz belonged to the village of
Campos de Goitacazes, in the province of Rio de Janeiro. Only many years later,
that territory became part of the Parish of Nossa Senhora da Conceição dos
Tombos do Carangola (Tombos – MG) – Comarca de Presídio (today Visconde do Rio
Branco – MG). Later, this territory came to belong to Vila de Ubá – MG, then to
Termo de São Paulo do Muriaé – MG, and finally, to belong to the Parish of
Santa Luzia do Carangola – MG
It is important to emphasize that
in the current municipality, the first village that was formed was São
Sebastião da Barra, 6 km away from the current headquarters. This location
became a very prosperous village, with the Paz District being created there on
May 13, 1886, and installed by virtue of Decree-Law No. 116 of June 21, 1890,
in the Parish of Santa Luzia do Carangola – MG.
The ancients attest that, when
the THE LEOPOLDINA RAILWAY COMPANY LIMITED Railway was designed at the
beginning of the 20th century, extending the connection from Carangola to
Manhuaçu, it would pass through São Sebastião da Barra. Farmers in the region reacted,
claiming that the construction of the road would damage and devalue their land,
as there was a superstition at that time that: “With the railway, the Spanish
Flu would come with it”.
Faced with such uproar and
opposition, the Company changed its course. At the height of the center of the
current city of Espera Feliz, the junction of the two branches of the railway
was located: to Manhuaçu – MG and to Espírito Santo (1912). The Railway
Station, the water tank to supply the steam engine, the firewood reservoir for
the boiler and the house for the railway maintenance team were also built
there.
The place naturally became a
point of convergence and, over time, a street was formed, the beginning of a
future city. Capt. José Carlos de Souza donated land for the construction of
the first houses, in the place that was named Rua Nova. In the center, Mr.
Dioclécio Lacerda built the first building, intended as a hotel. Mrs. Cira Rosa
de Assis donated the land for the railway crossing, the station site and the
area designated for the triangle, as well as the area where the Railway Company
built a mansion (residence) intended to house the British engineers in charge
of building the railway. Railroad. On the opposite bank of the São João River,
Major Francisco Pereira de Souza built a group of houses, which received the
name Rua Pereira, as well as the area destined for the erection of the Chapel
dedicated to São Francisco de Assis, and the area for the cemetery.
During this period, the location
received the toponym of “LIGAÇÃO” since the railroad THE LEOPOLDINA RAILWAY
COMPANY LIMITED made the connection between the states of Minas Gerais and
Espírito Santo.
In 1912, the Archbishop of
Mariana, Dom Silvério dos Santos Pimenta, created the Curate of São Sebastião
da Barra, appointing Monsignor José Maria Gonzalez as its first Curate.
Faced with such facts, the
District of São Sebastião da Barra began to decline and Espera Feliz was
experiencing rapid development, which meant that on September 18, 1915, State
Law No. 663 determined the transfer of the headquarters of the District, from
São Sebastião da Barra, to the town of Espera Feliz.
However, at the same time, the
headquarters of Curato, whose patron saint dedicated to Saint Sebastian, was
also transferred to the new headquarters of the District, that is, Espera
Feliz, being donated by Dona Maria, widow of Captain Francisco Gomes da Silva,
the heritage for the construction of the Matrix dedicated to São Sebastião. On
September 27, 1928, the Bishop of Caratinga, Dom Carloto Távora elevated the
then curate to the Parish of São Sebastião de Espera Feliz, appointing Father
José Lanzilote as its first Parish Priest.
Through Decree-Law No. 148, of
December 17, 1938, the Municipality of ESPERA FELIZ – MG was created, with
territory separated from the municipality of Carangola, with the Districts
Sede, Caiana and Caparaó included in its territory, whose installation took
place on the day January 1, 1939, with Doctor José Augusto Ferreira being
appointed mayor.
In 1963, the municipality of
Espera Feliz lost part of its territory with the creation of the Municipalities
of Caiana and Caparaó.
Currently the municipality is
made up of the Main District and São José da Pedra Menina.
The municipality of Espera Feliz
– MG is the headquarters of the District, installed on April 18, 1992, with its
jurisdiction also covering the municipalities of Caiana and Caparaó, as well as
being the headquarters of the 303rd Electoral Zone, also with jurisdiction over
the municipalities of Caiana and Caparaó.
